Six persons were killed on the spot and three injured when a luxury SUV rammed into those standing on the side of Pollachi-Coimbatore road at Sundarapuram on Wednesday morning.
The SUV, belonging to the chairman of a Coimbatore-based educational group and driven by his driver, rammed nine persons including a roadside flower vendor, a stationary autorickshaw and an electric pole before coming to a halt.
The deceased have been identified as N. Subashini (19), C. Amsaveni (32), A. Srirangadas (69), N. Kuppathal (74), V. Narayanan (70), all from Sundarapuram area, and an unknown woman.
Three persons who were standing on the side of the road — Suresh (40), Somasundaram (65) from Sundarapuram, and Nataraj (65) from Madukkarai — were injured. The accident took place around 10.15 a.m. when the driver P. Jagadeesh Kumar (34) was driving the SUV to pick up his employer, said the police.
A CCTV visual from a nearby shop showed the SUV ramming two persons standing on the side of the road at high speed. The stationary autorickshaw was crushed in the impact of the collision. All the six persons died on the spot. Subashini, a second year B.Sc student of a private women’s college, was waiting for bus to the college when she was hit by the speeding SUV. The police said that Srirangadas and Kuppathal, who had returned from the ration shop, were also waiting for bus.
All the deceased, and Somasundaram were taken to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) while Suresh and Nataraj sought treatment at private hospitals.
Mr. Kumar who did not sustain any injuries as air bags of the SUV were deployed, was assaulted by members of the public after the accident. He is undergoing treatment at CMCH. The Traffic Investigation Wing (West) is investigating the incident.
