Ghazibad: A 32-year-old man riding a scooter was killed after being run over by a chartered bus on Meerut Road in Ghaziabad on Thursday. The accident occurred near Ghukna Mod at around 9am when the victim, Pankaj Singh, a transporter, was driving towards his home in Sewa Nagar. Pankaj had left home for his office located on Meerut Road at around 5am on Thursday.
“After finishing some loading work, he was driving home. A private chartered bus drove up from behind and hit his scooter. The victim lost balance and fell on the road. The front left wheel of the bus ran over his head, killing him instantly,” the victim’s cousin, Vijay, told TOI.
According to police, Pankaj was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. A helmet, however, was found among the victim’s belongings at the accident spot. The bus, going from Meerut to Ghaziabad, fled the spot after the accident. It was intercepted by the police at the Meerut Road T-point on GT Road after a bypasser alerted cops by calling the control room.
On the complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the police have registered an FIR under sections 279 and 304A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC at Sihani Gate police station. The bus driver has been arrested .
