Angered over the killing of a BSc girl student in a road accident, locals blocked Varanasi-Lucknow highway for more than an hour in Jaunpur district on Tuesday afternoon.
According to reports, Rupam Upadhyaya (22), a native of Rampur village under Badlapur police station and BSc student a college in Pratapgarh district, had gone to market on her bicycle to purchase medicines. When she was returning home, a speeding truck ran over the girl at Puramukund-Rampur turning on Varanasi-Lucknow highway. She died on the spot. On seeing it locals chased the truck and caught its driver. They thrashed the driver and also damaged the vehicle.
Irked over delay in police action, the mob blocked the highway and staged a massive demonstration. Senior officials had to exercise hard to convince them to call off their stir. Police sent the body for postmortem after arresting the driver and taking the truck under custody.
Meanwhile, in Varanasi one Ram Nihore (55), a tea-betel kiosk owner and native of Katesar under Ramnagar police station was killed after coming under the wheels of a speeding truck near Ramnagar police station on Tuesday morning.
Shooters nabbed: Adampur police succeeded in nabbing two sharp shooters of Sunny Singh gang on Tuesday. The arrested shooters were identified as Abhijit alias Vikky and Ashutosh. Cops recovered two country made revolvers and live cartridges from their possession. Two days back Cantonment police had also arrested two other shooters of same gang from Central jail road.
